Mum’s the word from millionaire chocolatier Domingo Ghiradelli concerning the circumstances surrounding the suicide in Portland of his son Edwin (“Sid”), according to the San Francisco Chronicle
If rumors are accurate, his silence is understandable. Apparently Domingo could not face his son’s homosexuality, and exiled Edwin to Portland to separate him from his homosexual friends. Apparently Domingo arranged a job for his son with instructions to the employer to keep an eye out for any relapse, and the employer fired Edwin after he did relapse. After his request to return home for Christmas was rejected by his parents, who each sent him a hostile letter, a despondent Edwin spent the rest of his money at a bathhouse, returned to his hotel room, and drank poison.
If true, perhaps some good may eventually come out of this tragic incident. Perhaps it can serve as a reminder in the future of the need for tolerance and understanding of others’ personal lives. Perhaps one day homosexuals will be welcomed in San Francisco rather than exiled from it.
