“CHARACTERISTIC MODESTY”: Daughter of British prime minister visits United States

The Washington Post writes today of the visit to the United States by “Miss Violet Asquith, the charming daughter of the British prime minister,” who “[w]ith the characteristic modesty” of English girls, declined to pose for photographs.

One wishes the Post had interviewed her about somewhat less modest episodes in her past, for example, how Ms. Asquith “jumped off a cliff after being ditched” — or more precisely, in 1908 staged a fake suicide attempt on the day her ex-boyfriend, Winston Churchill, was married, in a successful effort to steal the spotlight from him and his bride. Given this impressive demonstration of acting ability one hopes that Ms. Asquith or, if not her, a descendant, will take up acting as a profession.
