There was no sign of defeatism or despair at last night’s dinner hosted by Old Guard Republicans at the Waldorf-Astoria in honor of the outgoing President, covered in detail by the New York Times, which the President referred jokingly to as his “wake.”  As summarized by the Times, in his speech, the President was upbeat:  “Though it might required one or more Democratic Administrations to bring the overenthusiastic to their senses,” he said that “the Republican Party . . . was ready to fight on and wait for the success which must come again.”

“Let us then buckle on our armor for the battle for humanity and the common people that must be fought,” he said.  “What we wish to assure ourselves of is that neither through Democratic radicalism nor through Progressive radicalism shall the pillars of our noble State be pulled down, and the real cause of the people be sacrificed to the dreams of demagogues and theorists.”
