The Washington Post reports that the more conservative portion of the Church of the Brethren (a Christian denomination with its origins in Germany; roughly German Baptists) — which stuck with the name “Dunkards” even knowing immature skeptics would refer to them as the “Drunkards” — have taken over the eleven-acre campus of New Windsor College, a Presbyterian institution in New Windsor, Maryland.
Until recently, they have run Blue Ridge College at Union Bridge, Maryland. Apparently that location became problematic due to cement dust from a profitable new cement mill in Union Bridge, so the cement company paid them $30,000 to move the campus five miles. Because the Presbyterians sold to the Drunkards — er, Dunkards — for only $17,500, the bargain was profitable for both the Dunkards and the cement company. One wonders whether there is anyone alive who might come up with a good theorem addressing such situations.
One certainly hopes the Dunkard Brethren will have a good, long run at their new location as they endeavor to serve the needs of their church and of the wider community. And one certainly hopes never to see actual drunkards take over a college.
