PROGRESS: Pictures can now be transmitted in only four minutes

Édouard_Belin_and_Belinograph

Reports the New York Times on a successful experiment in France by Édouard Belin.  Perhaps the most interesting aspect of his invention is that the device can work over either a telegraph or telephone line.  Even more amazingly, it is portable, weighing only 16 pounds. Apparently he calls his device the Belinograph.

Given the rapid rate of technological progress in this field, which in France is being called “telecommunication,” is it fanciful to imagine that a century hence it will be possible to transmit pictures instantly, using a device weighing only a few ounces?
